Fixed Blade vs Folding Knives: Safety vs Strength
Well, I am a huge knife collector and a knife user. Because I have that survival instinct in me, I love to camp and hunt. Therefore, every know and then I am looking to improve my arsenal of knives. There are several kinds of knife and every type of knife has its own advantages and disadvantages. It implies that a decision can be taken only in relation to what you are planning to do with a knife. However, the following is an overview of the concerns you may have to address while making a choice between fixed blades vs folding knives.
1. Advantages and disadvantages of fixed blades:
Generally available in large sizes, the benefits of a fixed blade is known to all. It is known for its sturdy construction and the ease of cleaning. Fixed blades tend to be double the size of folding knives. And, and the ones available in the market are generally covered due to safety concerns. However, this may create trouble for you if you reside in a State where carrying around fixed blades are forbidden. When planning for a vacation, take care to check the rules and regulations of your choice destination when trying to decide between fixed blades vs folding knives. You may be able to enjoy an exception if you are a farmer. Another thing to consider is the price when looking at fixed blades. I prefer the Ka-bar brand.
2. Benefits and defects of folding knives:
If you are someone who is willing to sacrifice durability for a bit of safety and comfort, folding knife is the one for you. I do prefer pocket folding knife over fixed blade knives, if the task at hand requires minimal effort. Pocket knife is famous due to the portability it offers. This is the type city-dwellers mostly prefer. The greatest benefit of a folding knife is its secrecy. Sitting in your pocket or carriage bag, it remains hidden from strangers and comes to action only when you ask for it. A choice here has to be made with utmost care. Make sure that the lock and the access pin of your knife is made of excellent quality material. However, the length of the knife may appear to be a disadvantage. The length of the handle would decide the length of the blade. I have tried several different kinds including the karambit style and stiletto. Both have there own advantage. I believe karambit is more of a self defense type knife. As mentioned earlier price plays a great role in making a decision. Folding knives are less expensive compared to fixed knives. I mean it also depends on the brand name. Although I am not fond of cheap knives, but I tried the folding knife by tac force, and it came out to be decent knife. Nevertheless, price does matter when comparing fixed blade and folding knife, but portability and ease of cleaning are main things which come to play when deciding between knives.
3. The final verdict:
This quite naturally leads to one conclusion when trying to choose between fixed blades vs folding knives. Go for both the options; one to perform small tasks and the other for tougher jobs.
