BCIO first trip to Wellington this year
Well we finally made it to one of my favorite lakes and it was even a nice day. What a surprise a warm Saturday! RELATED TEXT
Working til 1:00, we did not hit the lake til 3:00. It was worth the wait as I got one quick on a firetiger Rapala in about six feet in the middle of the lakes weeds. We ended up catching 13 bass for a nice day. Our second time in double digets this year in bass. We end up catching everything else, it seems, while chasin bass. I used crankbaits for the most part and paid the price in lost fish, as a result, including a nice one I missed lipping on the first try. There was no second try as he went under the boat and left with my crank stuck in him. Line fray problem? I guess.
All the fish were caught AWAY from shore in and over weeds in 6 to 15' of water. My son in law had great luck with Berkley June bug and I used Red shad. Both produced very well. Crankbaits from the Bill Dance line in medium and deep divers in a pale shad imitation also worked. I had not fished this color before.
It is a real challenge to fish this lake as it has crystal clear water and we were under blue bird skies to boot but it sends you home feeling good when you can have a good day. I think we did. The biggest we measured went sixteen inches. I didnt catch it but it was still a great day.
