Bass chasin in Ohio report for Nimisila 6/22/01

A long time back when my son-in-law was just getting started, we fished Findley State park because it had stunted bass that would hit anything when they were feeding. It is still a slot lake today but it is a great place to teach artificials. Most of all  plastic worms. We had a big day and when we came off the water a guy at the dock asked how we did. When I told him he said  " I ain't never seen no one catch 25 bass." That is when we started carrying a camera.

Saturday was a day you wait a long time to experience. The water was alive with action and we had our best day ever as a result.            Big day same day for lms

We started running our usual pattern after launching and the fish started coming quick. Working weeds away from shore and the drops in 6-13 foot depths. I told Jim they would be there again along the dam side toward the road , as we headed there, just like the last two trips. They were and actively chasing fire tiger rattlin Rapalas, just as before, as well as chrome and black. We left for other parts of the lake as things slowed and still the fish kept coming, mostly for him. He got his tenth, after losing three straight ,getting to the tenth.

We finished with our all time high of 26 with the last one coming at dark on the slope off one islands as we had agreed to give up on 26 at 9:30. I got a hit on a worm as he started the trolling motor. I swung him into the boat so fast it hit  my son-in-law's chest!

What made the trip work? Even though we got most of the fish on cranks when we went back to that area, that had been hot and there were schools of baitfish all over the surface, cranks brought nothing!  We had to change tactics and we guessed right. We stated throwing Berkley power worms into the baitfish and letting them drift down into the weeds. BINGO! That was the pattern that worked until dark. They hit june bug, motor oil and red shad, as we shook them above and through the weeds. What is ironic is we had drifted away from worms this spring. Yesterday it was back to basics and we have learned to be versatile in finding what works. I hope you do as well and we have tips all over our site, we hope will help you. Start by getting away from shore. WE HAVE.

Most were nice Ohio fish and the biggest weighed 2 pounds 12 oz's on our digital scale and went 17 inches. I didn't catch it. He finished with 15 and I brought up the rear with 11. I never thought I would see the day I got 11 bass and finish second best. It wasn't really even that close, as he had me all day long from the get go!

I guess if you are a real pro this wouldn't mean much but if you are just a weekend fisherman like us it means a whole lot. It made up for all the tough days this spring in the wind and rain. Ah summer. I will take it anytime!
