Bass Chasin in Ohio for Knox Lake

At last on August 3 2002, we get to visit a highly rated bass lake Knox Lake located near Mansfield and Frederickstown. Take route 13 south to 95 and look for the signs. We would suggest you launch at the stickup end and not the lower end as it is a long hall to the other end with a trolling motor.
We lauched at the as the sheiff was arriving and he stated fishing had been tough this year. Nice start for the old attitude and on a strange lake no less. Find links for Knox as well as other lakes in the area on our home page under lising of lakes by county. and locations.

Much to my surprise and despite his thinking, I had 3 bass in a short time with several locals looking on. Not much to look at but good for the ego if nothing else. I decided right off the bat to start throwing plastic worms, my when all else fails, goto lure. All three came on Berkley Bungee worms and hit right on initial landing. For some reason they were not hitting after the worm had been moved any distance so I didn't waste time getting the worm back to the boat. The fish were holding on shallows shelves above deep water and we threw near any shore structure.
The lake is unique in that it has shale cliffs on the edges that drop right into 12' or so and schools of shad were all over the water darting about and jumping for their lives. The middlle areas seemed pretty unexciting on the finder and produced nothing for us. Lots of houseboats were out and live bait fishermen catching sunfish.

We ended up catching 11 bass in total and I got 8 as my son-in law kind of struggled since it was quite hot that day south of Cleveland and he just wasn't into it today. None had much size but talking to several guys they said 3 pounders are not unusual and 4's come along.

In summary the lake is an easy drive from the Cleveland area and near both Charles Mill and Pleasent Hill, as well as the Mohigan State Park area and some nice little towns are passed through. We will go back again but will launch this time at the shallow end to flip and pitch those stickups we never got to and a vistor to our site fished with more success!
